LABOUR AND PRENATAL AND CHILD HEALTH CLINIC SERVICES

INDIVIDUAL LABOUR AND PRENATAL CARE SERVICES DURING PREGNANCY AND AFTER THE BIRTH OF A CHILD

Do you want certainty of the progress of your pregnancy and a safe beginning for your child’s life?

The safety of labour and quality of care in Finland is first-rate by international standards. A multi-specialist team of doctors and midwives is always responsible for the delivery, and the first priority of our entire staff is the welfare of the mother and child. Delivering in our hospital will ensure individual care and a peaceful, safe and gentle beginning for your child's life.

Our Finnish clinic system is unique in the world and we want to offer this for you to use as well. Finnish children go to the clinic at a rate of almost one hundred percent, even though the clinic visits are on a voluntary basis. Our prenatal clinic operations are divided into the maternity and child health clinic.

LABOUR

Nearly 2,500 babies are born with us annually. We care for the woman in labour according to her own wishes with modern monitoring technology and a family-centered and baby-friendly way of thinking. We are able to deliver both vaginal births and caesarean sections and provide high-quality care for newborns 24 hours a day. There is no congestion at our units, and our staff will ensure a peaceful, safe and gentle beginning for the family’s childbed time: the care is personal, individual and inclusive. While at our maternity unit, your care will cover everything: accommodation, meals, clothes, hygiene supplies and medication.

Deliveries with us are of the highest quality: maternal and infant mortality is one of the lowest in the world, the percentage of sections is small and our natural births without ruptures are first-rate. We take quality control very seriously and address all deviations immediately. A multi-specialist team of doctors and midwives is always responsible for the delivery, and our entire staff has been trained to perform at the highest level. You also have the chance to address questions relating to the fear of childbirth beforehand with the specialists in charge of the delivery.

THE DELIVERY

The duration of the delivery will vary from a few hours to a couple of days. The father or other support person can be present to support the mother throughout the delivery. The mother’s health is monitored during delivery through, for example, measuring blood pressure, pulse and temperature. We also always monitor foetus heart rate when needed. If necessary, the contractions can be strengthened with an oxytocin drip. During the delivery, the midwives and doctor plan the best methods of pain relief with the mother. In addition to drug-free pain relief, it is possible for the mother to have laughing gas or an epidural or spinal anesthesia. If there is a need for the sewing of the episiotomy or tears, it will be done in the delivery room under local anesthesia before moving to the maternity ward.

Sometimes a caesarean section will be planned instead of a vaginal delivery. In this case we will go through the delivery with you in advance and discuss your fears and hopes together with the specialists in charge of your care. The father or other support person can also be with you in the C-section and if you both are well, you and your baby will have skin-to-skin contact straight away. We have our own family recovery room, where you can stay together as a family from the beginning.

AFTER LABOUR

We encourage early interaction and skin-to-skin contact and support the parents in making the first contact with their newborn. The first breastfeed takes place in the delivery room, where the midwife will provide instruction if necessary. The parents will be able to get to know their new family member in peace. The mother is able to take a shower if she wants to, and the family will be offered a birthday coffee and some snacks. The women’s acute center will take care of the family for two to three hours after the birth before moving to the maternity ward.

At the maternity ward we will monitor the mother’s recovery and guide her to self-care and to monitor her own well-being. The newborns are by their mothers’ side around the clock. The purpose of the rooming-in care is to support and secure a good beginning to the life of the newest family member. Help with breastfeeding will be available around the clock. The midwives of the maternity ward have all received training and will support the family with beginning breastfeeding. The families can generally go home two to three days after the birth.

All the services you need are located in the same complex: the delivery rooms, the neonatal intensive care unit, operating rooms and family rooms. If neonatal intensive care is needed, the parents can take care of their child from the very beginning at the neonatal intensive care unit as well: each family has their own room where the parents can care for their child around the clock. This way we ensure the family a pleasant and peaceful beginning with their new family member even when complications occur.

PRENATAL AND CHILD HEALTH CLINIC SERVICES

The aim of our maternity clinic operations is to ensure the expectant mother’s, foetus’s and new-born’s health by means of health checks, screening examinations, as well as guidance and counselling carried out by a public health nurse and a doctor. In our clinic, parents receive support to the great change caused by the birth of a child. We strive to promote and maintain the whole family’s health and well-being.

The basis of our maternity clinic operations is the individual health care plan, which is based on the woman’s and her family’s needs, which is used to assess the need of care, examinations, guidance and counselling individually. Every year we care for more than 1,100 pregnancies / families at our maternity clinic.

Our child health clinic operations are operations that enhance the child’s growth and development, as well as the whole family’s well-being and parenting. The aim of the child health clinic is to safeguard the health of the child and to support the parents so that the child would have good prerequisites for healthy growth, development and well-being. At our child health clinic, we monitor and examine the child’s growth and development, discuss the family’s health habits and any issues that are possibly troubling the family. At the clinic, the vaccinations in accordance with the Finnish vaccination program are provided. The nurse and the doctor work in cooperation at the clinic.
