Colorectal surgery refers to the surgical treatment of diseases of the colon and rectum. Colorectal cancers are very common cancers (2 nd female, 3 rd male in Finland 2014, > 3000 patient/year). Our hospital provides individual, first-class treatment for them. For example, we have a multidisciplinary treatment path for rectal cancer: in the diagnostic phase of treatment, we use intestinal endoscopy, CT, MRI and PET scanning; the evaluation of optimal treatment will be done in a multidisciplinary team that includes, as appropriate, specialists in colorectal surgery, oncology, pathology, radiology, gynecology and urology; preoperative cancer treatments are mapped and implemented as multidisciplinary cooperation; high-quality surgery is also possible with robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgery, and post-operative cancer treatments and follow-ups ensure the best possible treatment.
We do full and partial, minimally invasive colectomies as routine procedures in colitis-related surgery. Our hospital was the first to perform minimally invasive, robot-assisted ileal pouch- anal anastomosis (IPAA) in the Nordic countries. We also do rectal and pelvic organ prolapse surgeries in the pelvic floor unit with gynecologists. In our pelvic floor unit we have specialists in colorectal surgery, urologic gynecology, prolapse gynecology, radiology, urotherapy and physiotherapy. The effective collaboration between different specialities offers patients the best available treatment.
