NEUROSURGERY

PERSONALIZED AND HIGHLY QUALIFIED NEUROSURGICAL TREATMENT

Are you or your family member carrying a disease for which you are seeking personalized and highly qualified neurosurgical evaluation, diagnostics and treatment?

At KUH NeuroCenter we uniquely combine specialists in different neurofields for personalized care of the diseases and injuries of the central nervous system. Neurosurgery and Neurology as well as our multidisciplinary treatment groups function in the same premises at KUH. Neuroradiology, Neurophysiology and Neurointensive Care are in our immediate vicinity.

NEUROIMAGING AND NEUROPHYSIOLOGY

In neurosurgical diseases, KUH Neuroradiology provides world-class neuroimaging and KUH Neurophysiology, the largest in Finland, preoperative mapping and intraoperative monitoring.

SPINAL NERVE ROOT OR SPINAL CORD ENTRAPMENT

We annually operate on 900 patients who suffer from radiating pain or weakness in the arm(s) or leg(s) due to spinal nerve root or spinal cord entrapment. When the spinal nerve root is compressed by a slipped disc, as shown by spinal MR imaging, quick microsurgical release of the compression under operation microscope often relieves the pain and restores the ability to work.

TRAINING AND EXPERTISE OF OUR NEUROSURGEONS

Our residents will receive high-quality Scandinavian and European neurosurgical training. Our staff neurosurgeons focus on their own areas of expertise and receive continuous international training in their own subspecialities of neurosurgery.

CLINICAL RESEARCH AND QUALITY CONTROL

The personalized treatment that we will provide for each patient is supported by our clinical research, large databases of neurological diseases at KUH NeuroCenter, and our strict quality control. We invest heavily in clinical research and development: six of our staff are Docents in Neurosurgery. Our research spearheads are intracranial aneurysm disease, degenerative brain diseases, spinal cord and nerve root entrapment, severe pain, severe epilepsy and functional brain mapping.

OUR OPERATING ROOM FACILITIES

Our operating rooms provide the most modern neurosurgical facilities, such as: neuroanesthesia; operation microscopes equipped with intraoperative fluorescence diagnostics; neuronavigation systems for image guided neurosurgery; intraoperative neurophysiological mapping and monitoring of the brain and spinal cord; neuroendoscopy.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUPPORT OUR CLINICAL RESEARCH BY A DONATION?

NEUROSURGICAL TREATMENT AND TREATMENT GROUPS

We evaluate and discuss many of our cases in multidisciplinary treatment groups, consisting of specialists from different neurofields, to provide the best treatment option for each patient:

Neurovascular Group – Neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists jointly treat aneurysms and vascular malformations of the central nervous system.

Neuro-oncology Group – Microsurgery, radiotherapy or stereotactic radiotherapy, drug treatment and follow-up for the central nervous system tumours. The group consists of a neuroradiologist, a neuropathologist, neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists and pediatric oncologists.

CyberKnife Group – Highly accurate and safe stereotactic radiation therapy for central nervous system tumours and vascular malformations, using the CyberKnife system.

Neuromodulation Group – Targeted long-term alleviation in severe intractable disorders of the nervous system, such as chronic pain, movement disorders or spasticity. Neuromodulation is provided by programmable stimulators placed under the skin. They are connected to electrodes on the motor cortex, deep brain nuclei, spinal canal or peripheral nerves. Spasticity or pain is also treated by drug infusion into the spinal canal, using programmable pumps placed under the skin.

Kuopio Epilepsy Center – Detailed neuroimaging and neurophysiological characterization in severe intractable epilepsy: can the cause of epilepsy be microsurgically removed or isolated? Intractable epilepsy can also be alleviated by methods of neuromodulation.

Pediatric Neurosurgery Group – Personalized care of neurosurgical diseases of children and adolescents.

Pons Group – Microsurgery by a team of neurosurgeons and ENT surgeons, also CyberKnife therapy, of acoustic neuromas and other posterior fossa tumours.

Sella Group – Medical therapy, endoscopic surgery, microsurgery, CyberKnife therapy and follow-up of tumors of the pituitary gland, in collaboration with endocrinologists and neurosurgeons.
