Neuro Center´s Director Pekka Jäkälä received over 200,000 euros for research project

Kuopio University Hospital´s Director of the Neuro Center, Professor, Chief Physician Pekka Jäkälä received over 200,000 euros in funding from the Academy of Finland for the SECRETO-research project in KUH. The subject of the study is the risk factors, genetics and prognosis of a cryptogenic stroke.

This four-year funding is part of the funding for the research consortium. Other consortium partners are Helsinki University Hospital, Oulu University Hospital, Tampere University Hospital and Turku University Hospital, and the whole consortium got over 1.2 million euros in funding.

Globally, 1.3 million people are affected by stroke at a young age, under the age of 50. In young stroke patients, up to half the cause of the cerebral infarction remains unclear. When the root cause of the disease is unknown, little information is available about its prevention and treatment.

The SECRETO project is a multicenter case-control study that explores the mechanisms and predictions of a cryptogenic stroke at a young age. The study utilizes modern heart imaging, as well as methods of genetics and biomarker research. The project will improve diagnostics of the disease and personalize it´s treatment strategies and provide the basis for the development of new drug treatment targets.

The Academy of Finland's Research Council for Life Sciences, Health and Environment awarded funding to 91 Academy projects with a total of 116 sub-projects. The committee will use approximately 44.5 million euros for funding. In its choices, the committee wanted to support the basic research of its industries, and strongly emphasized the scientific quality of the projects. Other decision-making criteria were the social impact and renewal of research.
